HTC Becomes Latest Licensee of DataQuill Patents

CHICAGO --(Business Wire)--

DataQuill Limited is pleased to announce HTC Corporation's entry into a patent license agreement providing access to DataQuill's U.S. Patent No. 6,058,304 for Data Entry System, U.S. Patent No. 7,139,591 for Hand Held Telecommunications and Data Entry Device, and portfolio. DataQuill is an early innovator in the field of mobile data entry and access systems. Through their licensing HTC joins other major manufacturers including licensees Nokia, Motorola (News - Alert), Inc., LG Electronics Inc., Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., Palm, Inc., and Hewlett-Packard Company, among others.

DataQuill's Fifth US Patent Issues

DataQuill also announced today that the United States Patent & Trademark Office has issued the company U.S. Patent No. 8,290,538. In addition to new claims covering aspects of smartphones, the new patent also includes claims that cover tablets and similar computing devices. The USPTO action is the latest affirmation of the validity of DataQuill's inventions. Patents in the portfolio have repeatedly survived USPTO reexamination proceedings and litigation challenges around the world and have now been licensed to more than 10 major high-technology companies. Key portfolio highlights:

  • The portfolio includes 41 issued patents with a key patent family of five issued U.S. patents (three of which have successfully undergone reexamination), and an additional U.S. pending application.
  • Each of the five U.S. patents issued over hundreds of patent and non-patent references and collectively the DataQuill patents have hundreds of claims.
  • Outside the U.S., DataQuill defeated a European opposition proceeding initiated by Nokia (News - Alert) and has national tage coverage in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. Foreign counterparts to the key patent family have also issued in Australia, Canada, China, Hong Kong, and New Zealand.
  • The U.S. patents, which have been the subject of litigation against Handspring/Palm (now owned by HP), Kyocera (News - Alert), Nokia, Research in Motion, and HTC, have earned multiple favorable Markman rulings, with virtually all disputed terms being interpreted in the patentee's favor.
