Lenovo ranks top in global PC shipments for 1st time

(Japan Economic Newswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) NEW YORK, Oct. 10 -- (Kyodo) _ Chinese personal computer maker Lenovo Group Ltd. grabbed the No. 1 position in worldwide personal computer shipments for the first time, with its share increasing to 15.7 percent in the July-September rankings, U.S. research firm Gartner Inc. said Wednesday.

Lenovo edged Hewlett-Packard Co. of the United States, whose global market share was 15.5 percent in the third quarter of 2012, as the Chinese maker has "taken an aggressive position on pricing, especially in the professional market," Gartner said.

Hewlett-Packard lost the top PC vendor position for the first time since the third quarter of 2006, it added.

Compared with the July-September quarter in 2011, Lenovo's shipments rose 9.8 percent to 13.77 million units, while those by Hewlett-Packard declined 16.4 percent to 13.55 million units.

In the third quarter of 2012, U.S. computer maker Dell Inc. ranked third, followed by Taiwan's Acer Inc. and AsusTek Computer Inc.

Total worldwide PC shipments in the three-month period fell 8.3 percent from a year earlier to 87.5 million units, ahead of the release of the new Windows 8 operating system in late October, Gartner said.

Another global PC shipments survey by U.S. research group International Data Corp. showed Thursday that Hewlett-Packard held on to the top vendor spot in the July-September period, closely followed by Lenovo.
