Landis+Gyr Announces Next Generation PLC Network; Gridstream PLX Offers Groundbreaking Performance for Smart Grid Applications

ATLANTA, Oct. 3, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Landis+Gyr has launched Gridstream® PLX, the next generation of power line carrier (PLC) technology for advanced metering networks that greatly improves data rates and communications capacity.

Gridstream PLX offers a large increase in data capacity over legacy PLC systems, delivering 15-minute interval data from each meter on the network and enabling utilities to view that data within 30 minutes. A true two-way communications network, PLX allows commands to be sent as data is received. The system's increased capacity improves the performance of over-the-wire firmware upgrades and data encryption for enhanced security.

"PLX is a groundbreaking development for PLC technology and continues to make it a valuable option for advanced metering networks. It offers the capacity needed to provide interval data quickly and accurately, while simultaneously managing the advanced applications for efficiency, reliability and revenue protection that return the most value for utilities," said David Olson, Director of Product Management at Landis+Gyr.

Key features of Gridstream PLX include: 15-minute interval kWh or voltage data delivered continuously from every meter 45 days of interval data storage at the meter Remote updating of module firmware Four adjustable time-of-use rates within multiple schedules and holiday rates Minimum and maximum voltage reads with time of occurrence by phase PLX builds upon Landis+Gyr's previous PLC network offerings, and maintains trademark features such as continuous and simultaneous communication with every endpoint. This communication method provides the advantage of unsolicited outage notifications, distribution line monitoring and time-synched "snapshots" of demand or voltage levels across the entire system.

"The release of Gridstream PLX further demonstrates Landis+Gyr's commitment to delivering cutting edge solutions that build on the systems already familiar to our customers," said Jerry Figurilli, COO of Landis+Gyr North America. "This presents a real step forward for PLC as an advanced metering platform and another example of Gridstream's future-ready technology." Gridstream is Landis+Gyr's leading smart grid platform that delivers advanced metering, grid automation and consumer energy management capabilities to utilities worldwide. The solution integrates a number of communication technologies - including RF mesh, PLC and cellular - under a single head-end operating platform to give utilities the best technology fit and value for managing and controlling energy distribution systems.

Landis+Gyr is receiving orders for PLX systems, with product scheduled to ship in February 2013. Utilities should contact their sales representative for more information.
