VALDOSTA, Sep 30, 2012 (The Valdosta Daily Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Will the earth end at the end of 2012 as so many have said a Maya prophecy proclaims Valdosta State University Departments of Modern and Classical Languages, History, Philosophy and Mathematics explores this theme with "Debunking the Maya Myth: Reassessing the Doomsday Prophecy, 12/21/12" this week.

This lecture series is the opening event in VSU's recognition of October being Hispanic Heritage Month.

Formatted as a panel discussion, several experts "will address the end of times prophecy," says Patricia A. Saunders of VSU's Spanish and Spanish Education studies within the Department of Modern and Classical Languages. "Dec. 21, 2012 is the end of the Maya calendar. Doomsday prophecy 2012 has become a topic that has inspired movies, documentaries and a plethora of websites devoted to the end of the world as prophesied by the Maya and their calendar." The panel features Dr. Amy Aronson, modern and classical languages; Dr. Owen Jones, history; Dr. Iwan Elstak, mathematics; Dr. Arsalan Wares, mathematics; Dr. Lavonna Laverne, religion and philosophy; and Dr. John Woodruff, modern and classical languages.

"The discussion will focus on the reality vs. the Hollywood fictional idea of the end of times through discussions on language, the calendric system, writings, culture, astronomy and mathematics of the Maya," Saunders said.

The discussion is scheduled for 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, Bailey Science Center, VSU campus.

Admission: Free and open to the public.
