Ex-intel officer sent to prison

Sep 14, 2012 (The Free Lance-Star - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A former military intelligence analyst from Gordonsville will spend 30 years in prison for distributing child pornography.

Joseph L. Bell was convicted Tuesday of seven counts of child porn distribution in Louisa County. Authorities said the investigation started in the winter of 2011 when the Federal Bureau of Investigations detected child porn on his computer.

Agents were going to search his house, but it was discovered that he moved to Louisa with a family that had three children, said Louisa Commonwealth's Attorney Rusty McGuire.

Bell was identified by the Child Safety Initiative (CSI Louisa) team because he continued to distribute porn from that residence, McGuire said.

During an execution of a search warrant, police found more than 400 images and videos of suspected child pornography, McGuire said.

In addition to serving 30 years in prison, Bell must also pay mandatory restitution in the amount of $18,000.

Bell had previously served as an intelligence analyst in the military and as a government contractor with a top secret security clearance.

The case was the result of a joint partnership between the Louisa County Sheriff's Office, the FBI, the Richmond Police Department, the Office of the United States Attorney for the Eastern and Western Districts of Virginia and the Louisa County Commonwealth's Attorney's Office.
