Zambian leader threatens to expel "nosy" diplomats

LUSAKA, Sep 07, 2012 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Zambian President Michael Sata on Friday threatened to expel diplomats accredited to the southern African nation if they interfere in its internal affairs.

Sata, who is fondly called King Cobra and is known for keeping a sculpture of a serpent in his office, warned that his administration will not hesitate to expel any diplomat who will be found interfering in the internal affairs of the country.

The Zambian leader, who won last September's election after 10 years in opposition, has since advised diplomats to "stay away" from Zambia's internal politics, saying it will been embarrassing for a diplomat to be chased from a country where he or she has been sent to serve on the basis of interference.

Speaking when he received letters of credence from diplomats from Nigeria, Germany and Somalia accredited to Zambia at State House, the Zambian leader said his administration has placed intelligence officials in all the embassies in the country who are providing information on what is happening.

"If you want to interfere in the internal affairs of our country, you know the Geneva Convention. Stay away..leave our internal politics to us," he was quoted as saying by private radio station HOT FM.
