Many exploitation mitigations are now common at the operating system level, leaving individual applications as the weakest link against attack. Valasek's presentation will go over security mitigations specific to the Windows operating system and show how developers can greatly increase the cost of exploit development by taking several small steps during the development process. As part of the Coverity Security Research Laboratory (SRL), Valasek is focused on researching new and existing security vulnerabilities, investigating and uncovering the root causes of vulnerability-causing defects in software code. This knowledge is built into the Coverity technology portfolio to better enable organizations to build security into the development process. Prior to Coverity, Valasek was a Senior Research Scientist at Accuvant LABS and IBM Internet Security Systems where his research focus spanned areas such as vulnerability discovery, exploitation techniques, and reverse engineering. While best known for his publications regarding the Microsoft Windows Heap, Valasek's research has broken new ground in areas such as vulnerability discovery, exploitation techniques, reverse engineering, source code and binary auditing, and protocol analysis.
