Home Entertainment 2012

NEW YORK, Aug. 13, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Reportlinker.com announces that a new market research report is available in its catalogue: Home Entertainment 2012 http://www.reportlinker.com/p0944837/Home-Entertainment-2012.html#utm_source=prnewswire&utm_medium=pr&utm_campaign=Small_Appliance Executive Summary The home entertainment market primarily consists of three main sectors: television, DVD, Blu-ray and video players; audio equipment; and PCs and games consoles. Key Note estimates the total market value to have declined by 1.2% over the past 5 years, from £7.32bn in 2007 to £7.23bn in 2011. This decline is principally down to slow economic recovery, following the recession of 2008/2009, with many consumers still refraining from spending on big ticket items, such as televisions and computers.

In recent years, the home entertainment market has changed drastically, following new product developments and technological innovations, which have changed the face of the entertainment technology market, and drastically altered the way in which consumers access content and the Internet. The tablet computer and smartphones, in particular, have continued to increase in terms of popularity in recent years, and are predicted to continue to do so over the forthcoming years. This has had a somewhat negative effect on sales of other types of consumer media, for example portable and non-portable audio equipment and video games consoles, both of which have lost market share to Internet-connected devices such as tablets and smartphones. The latter are often multi-functional, allowing users to download music, watch videos and television series, access the Internet and play games.

Within the television sector -- which accounts for the largest proportion of the home entertainment market -- HD devices continue to dominate; with innovations leading advances in television technology, many consumers are purchasing larger televisions with higher resolutions. On top of this, the digital switchover, due to be completed by the end of 2012, has led to many opting for a television with built-in Freeview or digital receivers. Indeed, according to the Communications Market Report: UK, which was published by Ofcom in 2011, the vast majority of homes now have a digital television, with 96% of people owning one. Technological innovations, such as three-dimensional (3D) technology, have also been introduced in recent years, however uptake has remained slow, with around 1% of the total number of televisions sold in the UK in 2011 being 3D-capable. Nevertheless, this area of the market is likely to drive sales of televisions over the next few years, as broadcasters such as Sky and Virgin Media continue to invest in their supply of 3D content to viewers.

Key Note predicts that the home entertainment market will continue to grow over the next 5 years, boosted in particular by sales of televisions and PCs, despite other areas of the market -- especially portable audio equipment -- likely to observe decline. Overall, the market is forecast to increase by 4.7% in value terms, rising from £7.23bn in 2012 to £7.57bn in 2016.
