BRIEF: Bedford County Sheriff's Office to partner with INTERPOL

Jul 20, 2012 (The News & Advance - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Officers with Bedford County's Southern Virginia Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force have joined with the International Criminal Police Organization's Human Trafficking and Child Protection Division in Washington D.C., Sheriff Mike Brown has announced.

Investigators with the task force, known locally as Operation Blue Ridge Thunder, will rotate through the INTERPOL office. The premier officer will serve a six-month assignment. The investigator's name is being withheld for security.

"This honor reflects on the professionalism, and tenacity, of the investigators working in this task force and their efforts to protect our children from the sexual predators that use the Internet in their nefarious and dastardly deeds," Brown said in a prepared statement.

The world's largest police organization, INTERPOL was formed in 1923 and brings together law enforcement professionals from 190 countries.

Bedford will be the fourth local agency to permanently pair with the organization's D.C. office, Brown added. The other partners are the New York Police Department, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and the Pinellas County (Florida) Sheriff's Office in the Tampa area.
