Chrome Is the World's Number One Browser - Statcounter

(AllAfrica Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) In just over three years since its launch, more than 200 million people around the world are now active Chrome users, making it the World's number 1 web browser, according to StatCounter.

Chrome ended the week of May 20 with 32.76 percent of the global browser market share, while the second placed IE came in at 31.94 percent - a 0.82 percent difference. Chrome's slight rise in popularity coincided with the release of Chrome 19, a stable version of the browser that added tab synching to the mix.

The arrival of the Chrome Browser was akin to the arrival of broadband -- browsers became speedy, reliable and easy to use, thanks to rapid innovation that puts improvements in people's hands quickly.

According to Google, Chrome was designed for the modern, multimedia web. A new version is launched roughly every six weeks, and users are automatically upgraded to the latest version, allowing them to take advantage of the newest features, innovations and tools that can make their online life easier.

Users and experts alike have praised the browser's elegant simplicity, speediness and clever security features, and Chrome has introduced web users to a number of tools and features that have since become the industry standard: features such as sandboxed browsing (so that if one tab crashes, the whole browsing session isn't affected, and any viruses or malicious software online is prevented from impacting the operating system); an 'omnibox', so that searching and typing in a website address become one and the same thing; InstantPages and Google Suggest; support for webGL and hardware-accelerated 3D CSS; web apps and more.

And with the recent launch of Chrome for Android, mobile phone users can now take the power of Chrome with them wherever they go.

Following the announcement, Google released a statement saying "We're proud of the role Chrome has played in spurring innovation in the browser market by virtue of being open source including encouraging all browsers to get faster, spurring a monthly (rather than yearly) release philosophy and lowering the barrier to entry for new browsers".
