The Oregonian, Portland, Ore., Oregon State Beavers rundown column

May 23, 2012 (The Oregonian - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Is it just me, or does Impulse nightclub in Corvallis need to go on Mike Riley's list of "places you are not allowed to visit"? As you've probably heard by now, OSU cornerback Jordan Poyer was arrested for trespassing late Friday night/early Saturday morning after being detained by Impulse security. It appears that Poyer had been kicked out of Impulse back in February, and asked not to return.

Yesterday Poyer took to Twitter, saying the situation got blown way out of proportion, and it was almost funny. Those posts were later taken down, but because people had already RT'd them (myself included) they will live on in cyberspace. I'm guessing that after he went off on Twitter, Poyer got a phone call from someone at OSU who advised him to pipe down.

For the public relations folk in sports -- known in the college world as sports information directors -- Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and any and every other form of social media has to be an absolute nightmare. PR people like to control the message, and it's hard to do that when an athlete is using their phone to tweet the first things that pop into their brain. As a reporter, it's nice to have the athlete's voice in a story we're writing. But each time an athlete says something that could potentially cause (more) trouble, I wonder if that will turn into "so-and-so is not available today" for the rest of their careers. Scott Crichton's little quip about marijuana comes to mind in this conversation ...

I can't help but wonder if given OSU's off-the-field problems the last few weeks, Mike Riley asks his players to stop using social media.
