Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell, China Telecom sign over EUR100 mln contract


SHANGHAI, May 17, 2012 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell (Shanghai Bell) has signed a contract valuing over 100 million euros with China Telecom (CHA.NYSE; 00728.HK) on expanding the latter's broa dband network access capacity.

According to the contract, Shanghai Bell will deploy netw orks for China Telecom's fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) project in China's 3 1 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions to help the teleco m operator to provide Internet protocol television (IPTV), video pay-p er-view, and VoIP (voice over IP) services.

China Telecom aims to develop 30 million FTTH users and t o have 100 million users able to enjoy its broadband services by 2015.


Romano Valussi, president of Shanghai Bell, said the coop eration between the two firms reflected the swift expansion of broadba nd networks in China. The project would accelerate the deployment of u ltra-high-speed broadband business in China and confirm Shanghai Bell' s leadership position in the FTTH market.
