BRIEF: Alleged leader of 'Los Gordos' bank robbers arrested in JuarezMay 16, 2012 (El Paso Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Mexican authorities have arrested the alleged leader of "Los Gordos," a gang suspected in a hefty number of bank robberies. Chihuahua state prosecutors said Los Gordos (the fat ones) hit 44 banks in Juarez and Chihuahua City with armed take-over style robberies in 2010. The group's alleged leader, Jose Ricardo Martinez Martinez, 25, was arrested last week by state investigators at a home in Juarez after Martinez was identified with the use of bank security cameras, officials said. Martinez is accused of fatally shooting a 57-year-old security officer in the head during the robbery of a Banorte bank branch in Juarez on July 21, 2010. Last year, investigators arrested Daniel Parra Martinez, an alleged member of the bank-robbery ring. Officials said that police have identified and are looking for the two remaining members of the gang. ___ (c)2012 the El Paso Times (El Paso, Texas) Visit the El Paso Times (El Paso, Texas) at www.elpasotimes.com Distributed by MCT Information Services |
