[May 16, 2012] Grant to upgrade Greenup 911 Tweet May 16, 2012 (Portsmouth Daily Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Thanks to a grant from the Kentucky Office of Homeland Security, Greenup County E-911 will be upgrading its communications equipment. Greenup County E-911 received a grant for $26,500 to upgrade its rural law enforcement communication channels. Currently, there are four law channels throughout the county used by South Shore, Russell, Flatwoods, Bellfounte, Raceland, Worthington, Wurtland, Greenup city and Greenup County Sheriff's Department. "We got this grant to link those systems together," said Buford Hurley II, director of Greenup County E-911. "In this process we are going to move South Shore's channel from New Boston back to Kentucky at a higher elevation. We are also going to add another site." He said all of the law channels will be combined into three when work is completed. "This way the Sheriff's Department could be on one side of the county and talk to someone on the other side of the county. Currently, they would have to cross channels to do that," Hurley said. "This will allow officers to have a more reliable system and less officer safety issues due to poor communications." He said equipment is being purchased now and will be in place by mid-summer.
