CEO Bartz to address UW-Madison commencement ceremonies [The Wisconsin State Journal](Wisconsin State Journal (Madison, WI) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) May 15--UW-Madison alum Carol Bartz, former chief executive of Yahoo!, will be the commencement speaker at the university's four graduation ceremonies Saturday and Sunday at the Kohl Center. Bartz, who received her degree in computer science, told UW officials that she missed her own graduation ceremony here in 1971, but will enjoy marking graduation with the class of 2012 instead. As CEO of Yahoo!, she was credited with modernized technology platforms, acquiring companies for expansion, forming partnerships, cutting costs, and growing the company's audience to 800 million. Bartz is regularly listed as one of "Fortune's Most Powerful Women" for her global technology leadership. She was hired as head of Yahoo! in January 2009, and terminated in September after the company was criticized for not keeping pace with Web advances. Before Yahoo!, Bartz spent 12 years leading Autodesk, a design software company. Earlier in her career she held several leadership positions at Sun Microsystems. Bartz is currently the lead director on the board of Cisco Systems, the worldwide networking company. Five ceremonies will take place during commencement weekend. Ceremonies will be held for undergraduate and master's degree recipients at 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Kohl Center. A ceremony for all honorary, doctoral and professional degrees will be held Friday night at 5:30. At the Friday ceremony, Madison native Rob Engelke, chief executive officer of Ultratec, Inc., will receive an honorary doctorate for enabling deaf and hard-of-hearing people to communicate via telephone. Each of the ceremonies will be less than two hours long and will be streamed live on the university's website. Dr. Mary Kelly-Powell, who is retiring at the end of the academic year after serving as a dean since 2005, will be the commencement speaker at Edgewood College's graduation. Graduation will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum at the Alliant Energy Center. Madison Area Technical College graduation will be at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Sunday at Overture Center for the Arts. Speaking at the 10 a.m. ceremony will be Jennifer Alexander of the Greater Madison Chamber of Commerce and Thrive.
