ATIS Wireless Committee Accepts New Venture for Automating Location Acquisition for Emergency Services VoIP Calls

(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) WASHINGTON, May 2 -- The Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions issued the following news release: ATIS announced today that it is working to identify technical methods by which location information can be acquired and conveyed for routing non-operator-managed over-the-top VoIP emergency calls, as well as operator-managed interconnected VoIP emergency calls. Based on a thorough review of existing and proposed FCC rules, this initiative is designed to meet the Commission's key objectives in this area, and to further telecommunications industry efforts regarding provision of automatic location information for interconnected VoIP and over-the-top applications of VoIP for emergency calls.

"The solutions developed through this new initiative will ensure that existing telecommunications systems and emergency response capabilities evolve to operate seamlessly in light of new technologies," said ATIS President and CEO, Susan M. Miller. "By bringing its experience on VoIP call issues to improve call routing solutions, ATIS is committed to ensuring reliability of the nation's 9-1-1 emergency communications services." This work will occur in ATIS' Wireless Technologies and Systems Committee (WTSC) and will include consideration of multiple access types, such as cellular wireless via a commercial mobile service provider (CMSP), wireline, cable, satellite and WiFi. The intent is to address access types relevant for both IMS-based and non-IMS-based VoIP services. ATIS plans to identify protocols that could potentially be implemented for user-to-network and network-to-network interfaces to accomplish the goal of acquiring and conveying location information for both operator-managed interconnected VoIP emergency calls and non-operator-managed over-the-top VoIP emergency calls.
