(AP) _ Google is hoping to build the world's largest digital filing cabinet in the latest attempt to deepen people's dependence on its services. The Internet search leader's latest product stores personal documents, photos, videos and a wide range of other digital content on Google's computers. By keeping their files in massive data centers, users will be able to call up the information on their smartphones, tablet computers, laptops and just about any other Internet-connected device.
Swiss scientists demonstrate mind-controlled robotLAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) _ Swiss scientists have demonstrated how a partially paralyzed person can control a robot by thought alone, a step they hope will one day allow immobile people to interact with their surroundings through so-called avatars. Similar experiments have taken place in the United States and Germany, but they involved either able-bodied patients or invasive brain implants.
New wireless subscribers down sharply at AT&TNEW YORK (AP) _ When Verizon Wireless started selling the iPhone, AT&T sounded a defiant note, saying that its customers would remain loyal. A year later, it's clear that the Verizon iPhone has crimped AT&T's stride. Verizon had little problem attracting new customers before it started selling the iPhone. In fact, it was the only wireless carrier that managed to keep up with AT&T's iPhone-fueled growth.
IBM raises dividend, approves stock buybackIBM Corp. is raising its quarterly dividend and repurchasing $7 billion more of its stock under a new buyback program. IBM said Tuesday that it is raising its quarterly dividend by 10 cents, or 13 percent, to 85 cents. The technology products and services company says this is the 17th year in a row it has increased its dividend.
China's dream of electric car leadership elusiveBEIJING (AP) _ China's leaders are finding it's a lot tougher to create a world-beating electric car industry than they hoped. In 2009, they announced bold plans to cash in on demand for clean vehicles by making China a global power in electric car manufacturing. They pledged billions of dollars for research and called for annual sales of 500,000 cars by 2015.
Company aims to strike it rich by mining asteroidsWASHINGTON (AP) _ A group of high-tech tycoons wants to mine nearby asteroids, hoping to turn science fiction into real profits. The mega-million dollar plan is to use commercially built robotic ships to squeeze rocket fuel and valuable minerals like platinum and gold out of the lifeless rocks that routinely whiz by Earth. One of the company founders predicts they could have their version of a space-based gas station up and running by 2020.
Apple stock hit by AT&T numbersNEW YORK (AP) _ Apple shares slipped in early trading Tuesday after AT&T Inc., the largest seller of iPhones in the U.S., reported a sharp drop in first-quarter sales compared to the holiday quarter. Apple is set to report another record quarterly profit for the January to March period after the market close Tuesday.
China official says Proview owns iPad trademarkSHANGHAI (AP) _ Apple Inc. risks losing the right to use the iPad trademark in China, a senior official suggested Tuesday, as a Chinese court was seeking to mediate a settlement between the technology giant and a local company challenging its use of the iPad name. Yan Xiaohong, deputy director of the National Copyright Administration, told reporters in Beijing that the government regards Shenzhen Proview Technology as the rightful owner of the trademark for the popular tablet computers. His remarks could add to pressure on Apple to find a solution to the standoff.
Smartphone maker HTC posts 70 percent profit dropTAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) _ Taiwan smartphone maker HTC Corp. reported a 70 percent drop in first quarter profit as it faces keener competition from Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. HTC said Tuesday that profit amounted to 4.5 billion New Taiwan dollars ($152 million) from revenue of NT$68 billion in the three months through March.
Apple's squeeze hits phone companies, competitorsNEW YORK (AP) _ Apple is set to report another record quarterly profit on Tuesday, continuing the relentless string of results that's made it the world's most valuable company. Those profits don't come out of thin air: A range of businesses _from the company's wireless carrier friends to its PC-making foes_ are seeing their profits melt away and flow to Apple's bottom line. Apple's success is good for the U.S. economy, and some businesses, like software developers and memory-chip makers, have benefited from the disruption Apple is causing. But its enormous gains have resulted in others' pains, sometimes in unexpected places.
