Apr 19, 2012 (Close-Up Media via COMTEX) --
Akamai Technologies, a cloud platform for helping enterprises provide secure, high-performing user experiences on any device, anywhere, announced the appointment of Richard "Mick" Scully as Vice President and General Manager of Akamai's Carrier Products Division.
With over 25 years of leadership experience in product management & marketing, strategic planning and business development, the Company said Scully will have global responsibility for Akamai solutions sold to network operators and carriers, including the Company's recently launched Aura Network Solutions. He will report to Robert Blumofe, Senior Vice President of the Akamai Platform Division.
According to a release, Akamai's Carrier Products Division is focused on solutions for network operators looking to leverage CDN capabilities within their own networks. Akamai's Aura Network Solutions are designed to provide both managed (MCDN) and licensed (LCDN) models for helping network operators and carriers monetize their traffic and reduce network costs.
"As Akamai looks to expand its business of creating operator CDN solutions, it was critical for us to find the right executive with outstanding leadership qualities, extensive experience developing and launching products, and a deep understanding of the carrier space," Blumofe said. "We believe Mick will be an invaluable addition to our team as we develop solutions designed to help operators create cost efficient networks that can capitalize on the explosive growth in Internet traffic and new subscriber services without the complexity of building a CDN."
"Content delivery technologies have become a strategic part of how network operators can continue to grow revenue while driving efficiency," Scully said. "Akamai is well positioned for this emerging Operator CDN market. Not only do they have an exceptionally rich history of working with network providers, but Akamai is also able to offer Operator CDNs instant federation to their highly-differentiated and scalable platform. I'm very excited to be working with such a talented group of engineers, product development, sales and marketing people."
During his seven years at Cisco, the Company noted that Scully held executive roles within the multi-billion dollar security and access routing technology business units, and within the VCE Company, a joint venture between Cisco, EMC, VMware and Intel. At the VCE Company, he focused on the management of cloud deployments of converged infrastructure.
Prior to his time at Cisco, Scully was Founder, President and CEO of Appian Communications. Under his watch, the company successfully raised $95 million in venture funding.
Earlier in his career, Scully was a part of the Proteon Inc. team that launched one of the world's first commercially available router products. He served as Vice President of Product Management at Wellfleet Communications, helping grow router product-line revenue from $50 to $540 million. He also played a significant role in the merger of Wellfleet with Synoptics to form Bay Networks, which would grow to $2.5 billion in just under 5 years.
