North Atlantic Fish & Chips in Fayetteville serves up seafood, family atmosphere

Apr 13, 2012 (The Fayetteville Observer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Mary Perivolaris and her family have watched the Bragg Boulevard corridor change since opening North Carolina's first authentic English fish and chips restaurant there in 1967.

What is now North Atlantic Fish & Chips began as an H. Salt Esq. Authentic English Fish & Chips franchise. After becoming an independent business in 1975, the name and menu changed, but the location and mission have remained the same.

Perivolaris grew up watching her parents, Demetrios and Georgia, serving customers made-to-order seafood in the casual dining establishment.

"Growing up in the restaurant business, we (she and her brother, George) were definitely restaurant kids," Perivolaris said.

Over time, customers began to feel at home with the personable service and affordably priced seafood.

"We have the greatest customers -- several generations -- and we have loyal employees, so over the years we've established an extended family," Perivolaris said.

That extended family has had a say in expanding the full array of seafood options North Atlantic offers.

"We definitely take suggestions ... we love it and we invite it," Perivolaris said. "We're serving customers our parents have been serving for over 40 years, so it's an extended family, and everyone is open and honest." Newer menu items -- bone-in croaker, pulled-pork sandwiches and chicken tenders -- have been added to menu. But some things need no tweaking.

North Atlantic's most popular menu item is still its fish and chips with malt vinegar.

"Maintaining the classics and doing them well, I have to stick with that," Perivolaris said.

With downtown within earshot on one side, and revitalization efforts happening further down Bragg Boulevard, Perivolaris says she sees the business holding down its familiar location for another 40 years.

"We love our location," Perivolaris said. "With the growth, of course, we're excited. I think it's definitely a plus to be on Bragg Boulevard." Staff writer Mike McCray can be reached at mccraym@fayobserver.com or 609-0649.
