Bullying law is tough enough, official says

Apr 11, 2012 (Tampa Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- WESLEY CHAPEL -- State Education Commissioner Gerard Robinson expressed confidence this week that Florida already has a strong anti-bullying law, but he welcomes the opportunity to work with state Rep. John Legg on the issue.

Legg, R-Port Richey, wrote to the commissioner last week asking for Robinson's assistance in fighting school bullying.

Legg was compelled to do so after learning about the death of New Jersey teenager Lennon Baldwin, a family friend whose apparent suicide on March 28 may be linked to bullying.

In his response, dated Monday, Robinson noted that a U.S. Department of Education analysis indicated Florida has one of the nation's strongest anti-bullying laws.

The law requires school districts to adopt a policy prohibiting bullying and harassment of students and staff on school grounds, at school-sponsored events and through school computer networks.

Robinson wrote that he is "confident that our state it taking a proactive approach to protecting our students from this persistent problem." Still, he expressed appreciation for Legg's concern and said "tackling the issues surrounding bullying and harassment will take a concerted effort at all levels." "I welcome the opportunity to work with you to ensure Florida's students are provided positive and safe learning environments," Robinson wrote.
