Suspect allegedly said bomb was in her son's book bag

LIMA, Apr 06, 2012 (The Lima News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A police supervisor on Friday told a magistrate that the suspect in the latest bomb threat against Lima Senior High School claimed there was a bomb in her son's book bag during a call to the school.

The revelation came during a preliminary hearing in Lima Municipal Court in the case against Amanda Hunt, 27, of Lima. Hunt is accused of making bomb threats against Lima Senior on March 19 and 27 and Lima South Middle School on March 16. So far, she's facing an inducing panic charge related to the March 27 threat only.

"The phrase something to the effect that there was a bomb in her son's book bag," Lt. Jim Baker, of the Lima Police Department, said.


The threat was placed just before noon March 27 to a secretary's desk at Lima Senior. Baker told Jerry Pitts, the attorney representing Hunt, that the call was not recorded by the school. The caller also did not identify the child, Baker said.

Baker said authorities obtained the cell phone's mobile identifier number and were able to triangulate the area where the calls originated. Armed with search warrants for Hunt's house, investigators found the cell phone in Hunt's possession inside the house, he said.

"The phone was literally on her person," Baker said.

Hunt, dressed in black and white jail garb, was mostly silent during Friday's hearing.

Magistrate David Cheney took little time in finding probable cause against Hunt and ordered the case bound over to Allen County Common Pleas Court pending an indictment.

Pitts asked for the opportunity for Hunt's bond to be lowered or for her to be placed on house arrest.

"In today's society, I just don't know how one can avoid having contact with electronic devices," Cheney said. "Communication is so very easy nowadays that the temptation or risk for the defendant to be involved in that cannot for all practical purposes in my mind be eliminated." Hunt remains jailed in lieu of a $150,000 bail.
