Sony to begin producing TVs with super high-definition resolution

(Japan Economic Newswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) TOKYO, April 5 -- (Kyodo) _ Sony Corp. plans to begin producing next-generation flat-panel televisions which display images more than four times finer than existing high-definition resolution, President Kazuo Hirai said Thursday.

The TV with "4K" advanced image quality is likely to be launched within the next several years by the Japanese electronics company, at an initial price set higher than for liquid crystal display TVs sold now.

Sony apparently plans to make products using the 4K technology one pillar to rebuild its TV business, which is believed to have operated in the red for the eighth straight year in the past business year to March 31.

"We'll actively commercialize 4K and create a market by thrilling consumers with overwhelmingly beautiful images," Hirai told a news conference in Tokyo.

Sony already markets 4K products such as home and movie theater projectors. Utilizing the technology, the company also plans to market video cameras for home use, while eyeing distributing 4K movie content via the Internet.

Among other next-generation TVs, Sony is also considering commercializing one with high-definition and energy-saving organic electroluminescence display.
