Pacheco soccer falls to Central Catholic

Mar 16, 2012 (Los Banos Enterprise - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A week after Los Banos High's girls soccer fell in its attempt to knock off defending Western Athletic Conference champ Central Catholic, it was Pacheco's turn.

In a similar result, Pacheco fell 2-0, but the Panthers feel that's a pretty good score against the league power.

"It's very exciting," Pacheco coach Karie Haygood said. "They played so well. I'm so proud of them." Central's Chloe Peepgrass opened the scoring in the 16th minute off a Bianca Juaregui corner kick, and added another in the second half off a pass from Samantha Manseau.


Offensively, Pacheco (2-7, 0-2 WAC) managed just a few shots, while Panther goalkeeper Maggie Morales kept busy on the other end -- the sophomore blocked 10 shots, and broke up several crossing passes.

"She's improving every single game. She doesn't give up," Haygood said. "She will fight for any ball that's in her area. I'm so proud of her." That attitude showed itself near the end of the game when Peepgrass separated on a fastbreak for a one-on-one with Morales in an attempt for the hat trick. Morales blocked the shot, but Peepgrass collected the ricochet.

Morales dove for the ball and tangled her arms among Peepgrass's legs to end the threat.

Central (5-5-2, 2-0-1) put plenty of pressure on the PHS backline in front of Morales.

"We have some players back this year that I had last year that have improved greatly. They're much more comfortable in their positions now," Haygood said. "One of them is Isabel Quintero -- she's doing a great job on defense. Last year she was a little timid and this year she's coming out of her shell." Pacheco's Rosio Ruiz had a shot at tying the game early in the second half on a fast break, but CC defender Clarissa Sandoval swooped in and nicked the ball away.
