Buckhorn set to get funkified tonightMar 16, 2012 (Silver City Sun-News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- SILVER CITY The Buckhorn Saloon is set to get funkified tonight at 7 p.m. when Melanie Zipin, bar and music manager at the Buckhorn, and her band The Sugar Leafs take the stage. The band, which features what Zipin called the British Invasion Martyn Pearson on drums and Roger Metcalfe on bass as well as Zipin s husband Jeff LeBlanc on lead guitar, will bring Zipin s soulful songwriting and vocal skills and the band s New Orleans-funk infused grooves to an audience gearing up for a wild St. Patrick s Day weekend. It s going to be a great time, Zipin said. They ve been playing together over the course of three albums and several years after getting their start at the Buckhorn in Pinos Altos, where Zipin discovered Pearson and Metcalfe s open mic talents, as well as her husband s, about 15 years ago. The band members, all of whom Zipin called talented musicians who can play multiple instruments, come together to create a sound that she described as groove-oriented acoustic rock, supplemented by her own songwriting, which she said tends to tell a non-linear story. They re capable of pretty much everything, she said. The Sugar Leafs are preparing for the release of their music video Here I Am on Thursday, from the album of the same title. The video, which Zipin described as a non-traditional love story, was shot in Silver City by John McSween and directed by Theresa Dahl-Bredine, who founded the local Virus Theater. It features two local high school students, Indi Blake and Grace Van Ness, in a video that focuses on discovering who you are as a person, according to Zipin. It s all locally done, said Zipin. Everybody volunteered their time, it kind of just speaks to how awesome our community is, everybody pitched in it was really nice. The footage definitely captures the warmth of the area.
