Imagination powerful -- but coy on its iPad3 role

Mar 08, 2012 (London Evening Standard - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Shares in Imagination Technologies, the British company that designs graphics chips for Apple mobile devices, today hit a record high -- a day after the unveiling of the latest iPad.

"Revenue showed good growth against last year," said chief executive Hossein Yassaie, referring to sales in the second half of its financial year since November.

Imagination would not confirm whether it was involved in the new iPad -- dubbed iPad3 -- which uses the new generation of 4G mobile networks that are 10 times faster than the present 3G.

But Apple has a near-10 percent stake in the company, which has previously played a key role in the development of the iPhone and iPad.

Yassaie said he was also seeing growing demand for its chip technology in televisions and cars. The shares, which today shot up as much as 9 percent to 658p, have risen tenfold since 2009.
