Pow! Sink your teeth into Angry Birds

Mar 03, 2012 (The Star - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- IPOH (THE STAR/ANN) -- All steamed up over the fact that you can't get the perfect score on Angry Birds? Now, you can dish out some form of revenge -- by eating them! Bun seller Goh Bee Gan, 45, however, was not driven by vengeance when she started making steamed buns (pau) resembling the avian characters in the popular mobile phone game in May last year.

"I got the idea to design steamed buns based on the cartoon characters after watching my son and his friends buy Angry Birds plush toys and keychains.

"I thought it would be interesting to design steamed buns based on them because the characters are round, colourful and popular," she said.

Although business was slow in the beginning, Goh said the number of customers increased through word of mouth.

Some of her early customers even started posting pictures of her creations on social networking sites such as Facebook.

"Initially, we only made a few designs to test the waters but decided to increase the variety after getting positive feedback from customers.

"Now we get orders to supply to school events and other functions, and some customers even use our buns at temple prayers!" she said.

Despite amazing sales that sees Goh selling about 300 to 400 pau a day, she has no plans to expand her business or hire workers.

"The bun-making process is tedious and difficult so we are reluctant to hire and train workers," she said, adding that the buns are prepared by her husband and her younger brother.

Goh's steamed buns are priced at RM1 for those without designs; RM1.50 for decorated ones and RM1.70 for the tiger-shaped buns.

Shopkeeper Yip Kah Chun, 18, was seen asking for an Angry Bird steamed bun and looked disappointed when told that they were sold out.

"I love their Angry Birds buns because they are cute and tasty. The first time I bought them, I couldn't even bear to eat them!" he laughed.

Goh's stall is located at Restoran Yee Fatt in Jalan Ho Lok Park, Medan Bendahara.
