TeliaSonera predicts tenfold increase in mobile data usage
(Cision (English) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) TeliaSonera predicts tenfold increase in mobile data usage
Barcelona, Spain February 28, 2012. TeliaSonera estimates that in five years an average smartphone user will use almost 3 gigabytes of data every month compared to around 300 Megabytes today, a tenfold increase. In the same timeframe we estimate that a 4G mobile broadband user will consume an astonishing 45 Gigabytes of data every month. The figures are for Sweden, but the trend is universal.
“Providing access and quality of service to millions of data hungry users every day is our challenge for the future. Understanding how to deal with exploding volumes of data, increased video usage, and removing barriers for international usage are keys to future success”, said Lars Nyberg, President and CEO TeliaSonera.
The GSMA predicts that in 2015 there will be 9.1 billion mobile connections worldwide. It’s not only people connecting, machine-to-machine connections are exploding, and TeliaSonera predicts that by 2020 there will be 100 million machine-to-machine SIM-cards i the Nordics and Baltics alone.
“We will provide a substantial number of these connections. Only a leading operator will provide voice, data, and machine-to-machine access anywhere at any time to any device with a high quality of service – this is our role, this is what we do”, Lars Nyberg continued.
TeliaSonera continues the roll out of 4G network and services in all Nordic and Baltic markets to secure network quality and provide the latest technology to the customers, with the aim to provide an excellent communication experience.
“We will develop our traditional high quality voice service into a modern Internet telephony service, with possibilities for interactivity, chatting, media sharing and much more going forward. On top of that we will provide services that our customers appreciate on the move; it can be for example mobile payment, navigation, storage and entertainment,” says Håkan Dahlström, President Business area Mobility Services, TeliaSonera.
For society at large, video and moving images will be driving the vast majority of the capacity increase, and TeliaSonera estimates that in two years’ time over a million Swedes will be watching television on their handsets everyday – the access, capacity and speed is in the center of the development. Business customers will increasingly explore the benefits of the combination between a videoconferencing app, a 4G-tablet and a high quality 4G network.
People want to stay online and keep in touch with colleagues, clients, friends and family also when travelling. Removing barriers for international usage is a key challenge for the future.
“The core idea behind the telecom industry is to connect people, regardless of their geographical location. We want to be true to that idea. That’s the reason why we in 2011 lowered our roaming prices with up to 90%, first in the Nordic and Baltic markets, then in the rest of Europe, and towards the end of the year in the big travel destinations of Thailand and Turkey. This year we continue with new markets and destinations,” Nyberg concluded.
