University of Redlands Marks Re-Opening of Santa Ana Location

SANTA ANA, Calif. --(Business Wire)--

The University of Redlands celebrated the official grand re-opening Wednesday of its Santa Ana location, which recently completed a massive renovation and refurbishing of classrooms and equipment.

The Santa Ana location, at 200 Sandpointe Ave., offers courses, credentials and degrees through the university's School of Business, School of Education and Continuing Studies programs. Gaddi H. Vasquez, a former Orange (News - Alert) County supervisor and U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Agenies for Food and Agriculture, University of Redlands Executive Vice-President Phil Doolittle, and Dean of the School of Education James Valadez were among the dignitaries to speak during the ceremony.

"More than 30 years ago, the University of Redlands started a tradition and commitment to adult learners," Doolittle said. "We've been in Orange County for 20 years, and this facility represents that ongoing commitment."

Keith Roberts, associate dean of the School of Business, credited the university's liberal arts focus with developing the skills necessary to do well. "Learn to play nicely in teams, and develop the ability to think critically," he said. "That's what college is all about."

Vasquez, a graduate of the University of Redlands, spoke on his experiences working as director of the Peace Corps from 2002-06, addressing the issues of hunger in the world today.

"Twenty-four thousand people, children mostly, died of hunger-related ailments in the past 24 hours," he said. "Twenty-four thousand in 24 hours, every day of every week of every year."

The technology and science exists today to end hunger, Vasquez said. Barriers to achieving that lie in corrupt governments, terrorism and the failure to develop sustainable methods for addressing those challenges.
