Sony Developing Next-Gen. Memory Chip with Micron [Jiji Press English News Service]

(Jiji Press English News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Tokyo, Nov. 28 (Jiji Press)--Sony Corp. said Monday it has started to develop a next-generation memory chip with Micron Technology Inc. of the United States.

Sony aims to make the resistance random access memory, or ReRAM, commercially available over the next three or four years.

The chip has the potential to become a major business, Sony Executive Deputy President Hiroshi Yoshioka said at a press conference.

The ReRAM is a type of nonvolatile RAM that protects data when power is lost. It boasts the processing speed 10 times faster than conventional chips but consumes less power.

In smartphones, the new chip could speed up the transmission of video files, Sony said.

The ReRAM has been developed by many other companies.

Panasonic Corp. will start mass producing the chip next year for the first time in the world. South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. has completed its development of the chip.END (c) 2011 ProQuest Information and Learning Company; All Rights Reserved.
