Mocana & IBOPE-Zogby Launch Quarterly 'Device Confidence Index': A New Leading Economic Indicator for the Internet of Things

SAN FRANCISCO --(Business Wire)--

Mocana (News - Alert), a company that focuses on the security of non-PC devices, today announced the release of the first set of scientific polling data forming a new index of consumer sentiment. The new quarterly Mocana Device Confidence Index measures how comfortable and confident consumers feel about the electronic devices in their lives. The survey, which was run as a baseline this summer and makes its debut this quarter with the first set of new data, is designed to act as a leading indicator of economic activity in the "Internet of Things" ecosystem, including the devices, software and services that make up this emerging market, currently valued at over one trillion dollars.

The survey asks consumers their feelings on four basic issues: their overall level of trust in a device, how well electronic devices work for them, how they feel about trusting these devices with especially sensitive information, and how anxious they are about hackers and viruses on these devices. Consumers are also asked to project how they think they will feel about the same questions six months from now.

"Lots of tech companies run polls. But almost none of those polls are conducted long-term, under strict scientific standards, with an eye towards producing a long-term set of 'big data' that will be of value to the entire internet of things ecosystem," said Kurt Stammberger, CISSP and Mocana's VP of Market Development. "We're sharing this data with the device communit, with the hope that as time goes on, the DCI becomes a leading economic indicator of where things are headed in the internet of Things, much like the Conference Board's monthly 'Consumer Confidence Index' polls are widely respected as leading economic indicators for the economy as a whole."

"Mocana's new Device Confidence Index provides a fascinating glimpse into the conflicted mind of the modern user of consumer devices," said Brian Reed, CMO of BoxTone (News - Alert), the leader in Enterprise Mobility Management. "The data reflect the struggle going on in the modern enterprise, where even as users may not be sure they are safe, they still want their devices connected to enterprise resources anyway. So to protect the user and the enterprise, Enterprise IT must deploy secure mobility management and focus on an educational process to raise security confidence."

The composite Mocana Device Confidence Index for Q3 2011 rose 2.7% over the baseline survey conducted 3 months ago; interestingly, though, most of those surveyed said that they didn't trust their devices to protect their sensitive information, and that number rose significantly over the past quarter. The Index also showed a significant increase in those saying that viruses and hackers are a problem on device platforms. In general, it is apparent that more people are forming opinions about the security posture of their devices, with "neutral" or undecided responses dropping in every component of the survey. When the Index asked people to characterize their level of trust in platforms, the most common response was still a "neutral" one. But the majority of those expressing an opinion didn't trust Apple's (News - Alert) iOS to be secure, and Google's Android platform and RIM's Blackberry fared still worse.

Polling Methodology

The Device Confidence Index is administered for Mocana by IBOPE Zogby International, one of the top 20 market research firms in the world, with offices in 15 countries. The poll is based on a nationally-representative sample of 2,349 U.S. adults. IBOPE Zogby conducted the latest survey for Mocana from October 11 through October 14, 2011. A sampling of IBOPE/Zogby International's online panel, which is representative of the adult population of the US, participated. To more accurately reflect the U.S. population, slight weights were added to region, party, age, race, religion, gender, and education. The margin of error is +/- 2.1 percentage points. Margins of error were higher in sub-groups. The MOE calculation is for sampling error only.
