Court Orders Police to Pay Albani N.5 Million for Violation of Rights

Kaduna, Oct 20, 2011 (Daily Trust/All Africa Global Media via COMTEX) -- A Kaduna State High Court yesterday ordered the police to pay Sheikh Muhammad Awwal Adam Albani, a Zaria-based cleric, N500, 000 for detaining him for 10 days without prosecution.

Albani was in June this year detained by the police in Kaduna for 10 days over charges of pre-April election bombing at Rafin Guza, a suburb of Kaduna; the situation that made his students sue the police.

In his ruling yesterday, Justice Tukur Mu'azu said since the police had failed to provide convincing evidence on why they held the cleric for 10 days without charging him to court, they should pay him N50,000 each day as compensation.

Reacting, spokesman of the Albani students Abdurrafi'i Abdulganiy described the judgment as a triumph of truth, saying "though we demanded N100million as compensation, the most important thing is that the court has shown that the police illegally detained Mallam (Albani)."
