Supercomputing exec director leaving Butte [The Montana Standard, Butte]

(Montana Standard (Butte) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Oct. 15--Rocky Mountain Supercomputing Center's executive director, Earl J. Dodd, is leaving the Butte-based company to "pursue other activity in the high performance computing world," according to an announcement Friday afternoon.

The RMSC Board of Directors named Jim Kambich, president of the Montana Economic Revitalization and Development Institute, or MERDI, as acting contract administrator.

Dodd, a Dillon native, was the first RMSC executive director and has filled the position since 2009. He helped introduce supercomputing hardware, software and services to Montana.

"I have been honored to help my home state move into the supercomputing and knowledge economy," Dodd said in a press release. "I see a bright future for increased supercomputing use in Montana to benefit research, education and business." Dodd will now work more with his own Ideas & Machines Inc., as well as i3D Inc., a strategic communication and technology marketing company.

RMSC Board Chairman Ted White said they appreciated Dodd's expertise, professionalism and commitment.

"(Dodd) helped advance the use of high performance computing in the energy sector, including the innovative 'MORE Power' initiative with Northrup Grumman. We wish him well in his new endeavors," White said.

Meanwhile, Kambich is excited to further help supercomputing in the state, he said.

RMSC operates out of the Thornton Building, 65 E. Broadway, which is owned by MERDI.

"We have been happy to have our building be the host for the supercomputing," Kambich said. "High performance computing can be an economic development driver for Montana, and we hope to keep moving in that direction." ___ (c)2011 The Montana Standard (Butte, Mont.)
