Waveform Technology Performs Major Data Center Upgrades

Oct 12, 2011 (Close-Up Media via COMTEX) -- Waveform announced the release of information about a number of physical upgrades made this summer to the Troy Michigan Data Center.

According to Waveform, the improvements will provide increased capacity to meet growing demand for data center space, improve service reliability, and maximize energy efficiency.

"We're experiencing a huge growth in the number of new colocation tenants we take on each year," said Waveform spokesperson Noel Montales. The addition of more colocation customers necessitates an increase in critical power capacity. To meet this demand Waveform has added over a half megawatt of uninterruptible power supply (UPS) capacity and replaced the data center's backup power generator with a new custom-built Kohler full megawatt generator.

Waveform now operates four UPS units, which function independently from each other to allow Waveform to meet increasing requests for fully redundant power feeds. This more than doubles the existing UPS capacity in the Michigan Data Center.

"We employ all Liebert UPS units because we believe they offer the best in class reliability and industry leading efficiency," added Montales. Liebert uninterruptible power supplies operate at 94 percent energy efficiency, making them more efficient than any other battery UPS available.

Additionally, the new generator meets the EPA's tier 3 standard for emissions, making it far more environmentally friendly than the previous tier 1 generator. Waveform now uses only ultralow sulfur fuel, greatly decreasing the amount of sulfur dioxide released during runtime.

A temporary backup generator was deployed during the new generator installation. Customer equipment was never unprotected from a commercial power outage.

Waveform also added 180 tons of heat rejection capacity to the data center's climate control plant. The new capacity accommodates further growth, provides an estimated 10 percent increase to overall energy efficiency, and creates a larger cooling reserve for more reliable cooling on hot summer days.

Waveform Technology is a privately held facilities-based Internet service provider and data center operator.
