BRIEF: Jeannette postal employee charged for faking assault

Sep 28, 2011 (The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A federal grand jury today indicted a Jeanette post office supervisor for faking a mugging to collect workers compensation for medical treatment and 32 days of lost wages.

Jeffrey Gogets, 50, of Hempfield carried an empty bottle to the Bullitt Avenue entrance of the post office shortly before 6 a.m. on April 18, waited several minutes and then threw his wallet and car keys about six feet into a grassy area, prosecutors say.

He then broke the bottle, laid down on the walkway and started banging on the door to attract attention.

Jeanette Police Chief Brad Shepler announced on July 27 that video surveillance and physical evidence didn't match Gogets' account of what happened and he had subsequently confessed to a postal inspector that the robbery was made up. Gogets had some bruising and minor injuries to his face, Shepler said.

The grand jury indicted Gogets for workers compensation fraud and making a false statement. He claimed $150 had been taken from his wallet, according to court documents.
