Beckley Concert Association touts new season

Sep 28, 2011 (The Register-Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Beckley Concert Association has released its 2011-12 schedule of events. Now in its 73rd year, the association is pleased to offer musical events to help enrich the community.

According to BCA president Betsy Gilmer, group members enjoy additional perks. Not only do members get to enjoy all five shows, members can also watch any or all of the five additional shows put on by Blue Mountain Performing Arts in Bluefield.

BMPA and BCA are both nonprofit organizations that foster and encourage public appreciation of music and make music accessible in the community at affordable prices, Gilmer said.

"We have a reciprocal agreement with Blue Mountain Performing Arts," she said. "Members of the Beckley Concert Association can attend any or all of their five concerts, and they can attend ours." BCA membership costs seniors $35. Adult membership runs $40, and students enjoy a discounted price of $15. A family pass, to cover all members of your family, costs $85.

Individual tickets, which can be bought at the door of events, cost $20.

"It's a bargain," Gilmer stressed. "Even if you only come to see two shows, you have already made your money back." --- All performances will take place at the Woodrow Wilson High School auditorium. All shows start at 7:30 p.m., unless otherwise noted.

The season kicks off Oct. 7 with "Sinatra and Basie at the Sands," a tribute to the men and their music.

The performance is a musical recreation of Sinatra's first live album, "Sinatra at the Sands." Other performances include: -- Nov. 7, The Cordis Quartet; the group redefines contemporary chamber music by fusing an original combination of custom-made and traditional ethnic instruments to create their signature sound. "We are sponsoring the Cordis String Quartet for students because they don't get exposed to much string music besides guitar and banjos," Gilmer explained.

-- March 6, Rhythm of the Dance, a National Dance company of Ireland presentation. Rated as one of the most popular and busiest Irish step dance shows in the world, this two-hour dance and music extravaganza contains a wealth of Irish talent from all walks of life. The show is an inspiring epic, reliving the journey of the Irish Celts throughout history using modern art forms of dance and music.

-- March 25 at 3 p.m., "An Afternoon with Barbara Nissman;" the audience will find much to admire in Nissman's total command of the keyboard and her absolute self-confidence while performing. Nissman, described as a pianist of a bygone era, continues the tradition of Roman Pianism, and she makes it relative to our century.

-- May 10, "Take Me Home: The Music of John Denver," starring Jim Curry; a tribute, accompanied by multimedia images of wildlife photos and videos, this show is sure to fill up your senses.

Blue Mountain Performing Arts 2011-12: -- Nov. 3 at Harman Chapel, Bluefield College, Billy Dean, a country musician, will take stage.

-- Nov. 19 at Harman Chapel, Andrew McKnight & Beyond Borders, a mixture of Appalachian and blues-style storytelling, will be featured.

-- Feb. 28 at Chuck Mathena Center in Princeton, the Golden Dragon Acrobats; with performers who are trained in the rigorous art of acrobatics since early youth, the troupe has garnered international acclaim.

-- April 28 at First United Methodist Church in Bluefield, Va., Camerata Virtuosi New York will play classical chamber music.
