*** International Business Machines Assigned Patent ALEXANDRIA, Va., Sept. 27 -- International Business Machines, Armonk, N.Y., has been assigned a patent (8,023,655) developed by Hongxia Jin, San Jose, Calif., Jeffrey Bruce Lotsplech, Henderson, Nev., and Philip Anastasios Zigoris, Santa Cruz, Calif., for a "system, method, and service for tracing traitors from content protection circumvention devices." The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: "A traitor tracing system generates a hypothesized model of the circumvention device that models a hypothesized set of device keys compromised by the circumvention device. The system iteratively invokes a subset tracing system to identify a compromised device key until substantially all the compromised device keys in the set of compromised device keys are identified so as to disable the circumvention device. A subset tracing system generates a circumvention device model that models behavior of a circumvention device using prior knowledge and The system iteratively selects and applies to the circumvention device a test based on the hypothesized model and the circumvention device model and receives a response from the circumvention device indicating a success of the test in playing protected content on the circumvention device. The system updates the hypothesized model using the received response, the selected test, a current version of the hypothesized model, and a current version of the circumvention device model to focus the test selecting process in determining the device keys obtained from the traitor." The patent application was filed on June 5, 2008 (12/134,113). The full-text of the patent can be found at http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&Sect2=HITOFF&p=1&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsearch-bool.html&r=1&f=G&l=50&co1=AND&d=PTXT&s1=8,023,655.PN.&OS=PN/8,023,655&RS=PN/8,023,655 Written by Arpi Sharma; edited by Jaya Anand.

*** International Business Machines Assigned Patent for System and Method for Solving the "Birthday Problem" with Watermarking ALEXANDRIA, Va., Sept. 27 -- International Business Machines, Armonk, N.Y., has been assigned a patent (8,023,693) developed by four co-inventors for a "system and method for solving the "birthday problem" with watermarking." The co-inventors are Thomas A. Bellwood, Austin, Texas, James M. Gasiewski, Woodside, Calif., Donald E. Leake Jr., Vestal, N.Y., and Jeffrey B. Lotspiech, Henderson, Nev.

The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: "A system and method are provided for facilitating the playing of a watermarked video having the "birthday problem". Consumers send the problem disc to an authorization center where the disc is analyzed to determine if it is a legitimate disc. The authorization center generates a digital certificate uniquely associated with the disc and with the video and embeds the digital certificate into the disc. The digital certificate will cause a video player to play the video without checking for the watermark." The patent application was filed on May 31, 2008 (12/131,073). The full-text of the patent can be found at http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&Sect2=HITOFF&p=1&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsearch-bool.html&r=1&f=G&l=50&co1=AND&d=PTXT&s1=8,023,693.PN.&OS=PN/8,023,693&RS=PN/8,023,693 Written by Arpi Sharma; edited by Jaya Anand.

*** Toad Assigned Patent ALEXANDRIA, Va., Sept. 27 -- Toad, Incline Village, Nev., has been assigned a patent (8,021,316) developed by Hans G. Franke, Incline Village, Nev., David Salinger, Olympic Valley, Calif., and Jeff Dodd, Truckee, Calif., for a "weight-bearing lower extremity brace." The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: "The present disclosure relates, according to some embodiments, to a device and/or system (e.g., redistributing weight away from a subject's foot), which may comprise (a) a platform, (b) at least one vertical support fixed to the platform and extending upwardly from the platform, and (c) at least one cuff (i) configured to surround and releasably grip at least a portion of a subject's leg other than the foot and (ii) adjustably mounted to the at least one vertical support at a vertical position along the at least one vertical support sufficient to suspend a subject's foot in a non-weight-bearing position above the platform during ambulation, wherein the platform, the at least one vertical support, and the at least one cuff together are configured to bear at least the subject's full weight." The patent application was filed on Nov. 26, 2008 (12/324,185). The full-text of the patent can be found at http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&Sect2=HITOFF&d=PALL&p=1&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsrchnum.htm&r=1&f=G&l=50&s1=8,021,316.PN.&OS=PN/8,021,316&RS=PN/8,021,316 Written by Shabnam Sheikh; edited by Jaya Anand.
