Safe and sound

ATHENS, Sep 26, 2011 (Athens Daily Review - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Customers of First State Bank of Athens, your online accounts are safe and secure.

First State Bank Senior Vice President Dan Dwelle related that a customer e-mailed the bank on Sunday morning relaying information that the bank's website had been defaced, and inquired as to the significance of the situation.

"The bank's public website, which was affected by the defacement, is a totally separate website from our Internet Banking website, which is positioned behind a secure firewall," Dwelle explained.

The public website is hosted by Equinix, a data center that provides services for an approximate million websites, and thousands were temporarily effected.

Reports show that the defacement to the public site occurred between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m., and was resolved by Equinix shortly thereafter.

"First State Bank was not specifically targeted in this event Sunday morning," Dwelle said. "A defacement event such as this should not be confused with a hacker gaining access to customer information. The bank's Internet Banking provider, the provider who provides access to customer information, was not part of this event." IT Officer Joshua Holt explained that, "The event was purely cosmetic, as none of our customer information was involved. What happened is similar to a graffiti artist tagging a water tower or building." Dwelle estimated that less than 50 customers accessed the FSB website during the defacement, and confirmed that no account information was stolen.
