Iryn Leads in Pam NominationsSep 26, 2011 (The Monitor/All Africa Global Media via COMTEX) -- The Pam awards released the list of this year's nominees at a cocktail party at UBC TV gardens on Thursday evening. A bunch of established artistes and newcomers made it to the event, which was presided over by the organising committee chairman, Mr Isaac Mulindwa. The nomination results show that female singers are steadily bridging the gap between them and the males. There are more female artistes than men in the top categories this year, including two in the Artiste of the Year category in the shape of Iryn Namubiru and Angela Kalule - thanks to their hits Birowozo and Katikitiki, respectively. Actually, Iryn leads the nominees' pack with six nods followed by the trio of two-time winner Jose Chameleone, Bebe Cool and Kalule, who each notched up five nods. The quartet will also battle each other for the most coveted Artiste of the Year accolade. Good Lyfe have four nods while Bobi Wine and Keko each has three nominations. Meanwhile, Juliana Kayomozi, the only female artiste to have won the Artiste of the Year accolade, appears nowhere on this year's nominees' list despite releasing a couple of love jams this year. The Best Female category sees three new entrants join usual suspect Iryn Namubiru and these include Angella Kalule, rapper Keko and Jackie Chandiru. The Best Male brings Aziz Azion against old foes Chameleone, Bobi Wine and Bebe Cool. Namubiru's Biroowozo, Good Lyfe's Talk and Talk and Angela by Sizzaman will tussle it out with Katikitiki by Kalule for Song of the Year. But the tighter battle could be for the Album of the Year where Katikitiki faces Chameleone's Mukisa Gwo, Bebe's Minzani and Biroowozo by Namubiru. The Best New Artiste category has Walden and Chozen Blood, Chris Evans, Mun G and Sizzaman. The regional categories have the usual suspects. This year's voting will be by SMS and online (powered by HiPipo.com). The awards cermony will take place on November 5. |
