NITK student nets a cool $1.5 lakh pay packet! [Mangalore] [Times of India]

(Times of India Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) MANGALORE: Two years ago as a B Tech student, he received Rs 9 lakh offer from Microsoft for a job in Hyderabad office. But the student in him saw Srinivas Balasubramanian, this wiry youth from Chennai, pursue his M Tech programme in information technology at NITK, the same place where he did his graduate studies. This decision saw him hit jackpot when he landed a $1.5 lakh per annum pay packet and a job at Microsoft's HQ at Redmond, USA.

Now into his third semester of M Tech, Srinivas, a first batch student of IT branch of this PG programme at NITK, will take up the job at Redmond sometime in June or early July 2012. The job offer received by Srinivas, notes Sandeep Sancheti, director, NITK is the highest ever offered to NITK student. "The last year has been good for us on placement front and quite a few of our students have hit the Rs 20-lakh plus pay packets," Sancheti said.

Srinivas, in an informal chat with TOI on the sidelines of the eighth annual convocation of NITK here, on Sunday said he would be into software development at Redmond and working on with their Bing search engine team. With no industrial exposure per se, Srinivas, who is into research into parallel computing in his M Tech programme, said, "We are seeking funding to work on general purpose computing on graphics processors with AMD/NVIDIA." Modest about his pay packet that comes at CTC of $1.5 lakh per annum, Srinivas is more pragmatic in his approach to life. "It is lot of money, no doubt," he says, adding the reality of the job offer, which came knocking his doors during a campus placement drive held during first week of August, is yet to sink in. Srinivas' peers incidentally recognised his achievement in that he got lots of cheers when he went up the stage to receive his B Tech degree.
