Woman Survives Vicious Attack

Oshakati, Sep 22, 2011 (New Era/All Africa Global Media via COMTEX) -- "As I was entering his bedroom, he hacked me three times on the head. I ran away but he ran after me and held me against the corner of the homestead. I tried to shield myself using my arms but he chopped off part of my left arm, and it fell outside the homestead I continued to shield myself with the remaining arm but he hacked it too " said Amalia Hamukwaya (22).

She miraculously survived a panga attack from her boyfriend of five years and the father of her two year-old-son though her left hand was hacked off during the gruesome attack.

Hamukwaya was attacked in the full view of her jilted lover's family, but there was little that they could do to the man as he threatened to chop off the arms of anybody who dared intervene.

The young woman is however lucky to lie in a hospital bed and recount the horror incident that took place in the early hours of Monday.

She sustained three panga cuts in the head, her left arm was chopped off and her right hand and arm are attached together by a piece of bone and she lost a lot of blood. The person responsible for her misery is Tobias Shilula (25), her boyfriend of many years, who later committed suicide by hanging himself.

According to Hamukwaya the attack came as a surprise to her as it happened the morning after the couple's romantic night together.

"Everything was fine. We slept together at our house (Hamukwaya's parents' homestead). He woke up at 04h00 and went back home. He returned at 05h00 and went back again. At 06h00, he returned again, telling me to go with him to his homestead to collect my cellphone from his house," she said.

According to Hamukwaya, she and Shilula had earlier exchanged cellphones. That morning, Shilula said he wanted his cellphone back but he was "concerned" that Hamukwaya would spend some days without a cellphone as he had to travel for a few days. That was the reason why he allegedly invited her to go and collect her cellphone "When we went to his homestead, he went to his bedroom and I followed him but before I could enter, he hacked me with a panga on the head. He hacked me again, and again I ran away but he followed me," Hamukwaya narrated.

The Monday event was allegedly the sixth time Shilula had taken out a panga to attack Hamukwaya. The six incidents are among many where Hamukwaya suffered physical abuse at the hands of Shilula.

"He used to hit me, more especially when he was drunk. One day he hit me with a panga on the neck. That day my father warned him and he had since stopped drinking.

"This time around I don't really know his reasons. We had problems, but that was a long time ago and I believed that we solved those problems. Anyway, I am just glad that I am alive because he aimed at killing me before he hanged himself," she said.

Hamukwaya is admitted at Oshakati Intermediate Hospital. Her condition is said to be stable.
