MTI Mavericks take seventh in rodeo competition


Sep 20, 2011 (The Daily Republic - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Mitchell Technical Institution's rodeo team competed in its first event of the fall season over the weekend in River Falls, Wis.

The MTI Mavericks took seventh place at the 47th annual Falcon Frontier Days Rodeo, hosted by the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.

Dalton Hump, of Faith, was the Mavericks' top finisher at the competition. He took second place in the saddle bronc competition. Hump is in his second year with the Mavericks and is a telecommunications major. He graduated from Dupree High School.

First-year Maverick Ryan Harris finished third in the team roping competition.

Harris teamed with South Dakota State University's Trevor Hupp in the event.


Harris is from Highmore and is a graduate of Stanley County High School.

"That was the first rodeo of the season, so I was happy with how it turned out," said Mavericks coach Jimmie Nicolaus, who has been to the past 26 Falcon Frontier Days The Mavericks have six team members this season. Joining Hump and Harris are Tanner Lolley, Casey Sawvell, Dillon Ducheneaux and Cole Pateneaude.

Lolley is in his third year on the team and is a graduate of the electrical construction and maintenance program at MTI.

He competes in the tie-down roping and team roping events.

Sawvell is a heating and cooling technology major. He is from Quinn and competes in the saddle bronc riding and team roping events.

Ducheneaux is a first-year Maverick from Mobridge. He majors in wind turbine technology and competes in the saddle bronc event.

Pateneaude is a telecommunications major from Eagle Butte. He is a first-year Maverick who competes in the bareback bronc riding competition.

The Mavericks have three more competitions in the next month to close out their season. Their next competition is at the Cyclone Stampede Rodeo, hosted by Iowa State University, on Sept. 30 through Oct. 1 in Ames, Iowa.
