MHI becomes target of hacker attack

Sep 20, 2011 (CORPORATE IT UPDATE via COMTEX) -- 20 September 2011 -- Hackers have attacked computers and servers at facilities of Japan's defence contractor Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (TYO:7011), or MHI, in what is deemed to be the first cyberattack on the country's defence sector, the Financial Times reports.

Among the targets of the attack are 80 personal computers and servers at the company's plants for submarines, escort ships, missiles, as well as a factory for making nuclear plant parts.

MHI said it had detected the attack in the middle of last month and that the investigation into the issue would continue until the end of September. The company noted that there was no leakage of important information concerning its technology and products. But the hackers had managed to get access to a number of Internet protocol addresses.

The incident comes after a raft of similar attacks on US intelligence and defence companies this year. US computer security expert McAfee last month said that cyberattacks had obtained access to 72 government and other organisations, mostly in the US.
