Energy efficiency benefits of cloud computing assessed by Pike Research

Sep 20, 2011 (TELECOMWORLDWIRE via COMTEX) -- The continued growth in cloud computing is predicted to result in a 31% reduction in data centre energy consumption from 2010 to 2020, market research and consulting firm Pike Research said today.

Compared with traditional data centres, clouds are less expensive to operate, consume less energy and have higher utilisation rates. Because of this the transition to the cloud is expected to continue accelerating, with much of the work done today in internal data centres being outsourced to the cloud by the end of the decade.

Suppliers of servers, network equipment, disk drives and cooling and power equipment will increasingly design their products to suit the needs of large cloud operators, resulting in improved operating margins through better use of electricity and even wider adoption, Pike Research believes.
