Chiefs pay for frustration with penaltiesDETROIT, Sep 19, 2011 (The Kansas City Star - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Frustrated with their lowly predicament, the Chiefs took some of their anger out Sunday on the Lions. Just not in the way they wanted to. Rather than making Detroit pay on the scoreboard, the Chiefs were penalized for personal fouls four times in the first half of their 48-3 loss. "We really wanted to come out and be aggressive, but you can't make the wrong choices," Chiefs coach Todd Haley said. It started on Detroit's first possession. On a running play, Lions wide receiver Titus Young continued to block Chiefs cornerback Brandon Flowers after the whistle. Safety Sabby Piscitelli grabbed Young, pulling him away from Flowers. Young took a swing at Piscitelli, but the Chiefs were called for a personal foul. That penalty was declined. The Chiefs were also flagged for unnecessary roughness on Brandon Carr, and that penalty was accepted. "I don't know what they called," Piscitelli said. "I just pulled him away. He was attacking my player. I just made sure that he stopped putting his hands on (Flowers)." On the next play, Chiefs defensive lineman Glenn Dorsey was penalized for roughing the passer after taking down Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford after he released a pass. "This is the most penalties I've had since I can remember," Dorsey said, still upset a half-hour after the game was finished. "So now you're telling me I turned around and I'm a dirty player? "I'm mad right now, and I'm not about to just explode. I've got to keep a cool head. When you lose, it's frustrating." But Dorsey wasn't interested in making excuses. "They played a better game than we did," he said. "The only thing that will make it better is us going back to work, changing something and just digging deep within ourselves." In the second quarter, the Lions extended a drive when the Chiefs' Demorrio Williams was penalized for roughing the punter. Haley said he wanted a look at the video, because he thought Williams might have been blocked into Detroit's punter, Ryan Donahue. "But the officials saw it the way they saw it," Haley said. ___ (c)2011 The Kansas City Star (Kansas City, Mo.)
