'Sucker Punch' almost as fun as it is confusing

Sep 16, 2011 (Pauls Valley Daily Democrat - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- PAULS VALLEY, Oklahoma -- Given some of the things that have made it to theaters in recent years, I often wonder how much money I could milk out of my most disconnected and bizarre dreams. This is really the only way I could explain the mish mash which was this graphic novel meets video game DVD, which I picked up in the past couple of weeks.

I'm not saying genre mixing is a bad thing and I've enjoyed quite a bit of the emerging "steam punk" culture, but you certainly don't want to watch this unless you plan to pay very close attention. There is a great deal of the flick which is very entertaining, though it is one of those things which may not appeal to a very wide audience. "Sucker Punch" is a visual treat and certainly earns its place among others of this theme.

The story focuses on a young girl, later known as Baby Doll (Emily Browning), whose world is pretty much screwed up from the beginning. This is through a series of tragedies from the death of her mother and sister to her stepfather (Gerard Plunkett) having her committed to insane asylum.

To get away from this screw job, she creates this world within many worlds where she is a heroine bent on helping other captive gals escape a vision dominated by a corrupt pimp of sorts. These worlds blend together in a Wizard of Oz/Alice in Wonderland sort of way where things from reality are used to create all sorts of fantasies. There's no easy way to describe pulp fiction of this caliber other than lots of pretty cool fight scenes with a wise man (Scott Glen), robots, zombie Nazis, castle storming and sensual dancing.

In other words, there were times when this movie was pretty hard to follow and isn't something I will probably see again too soon. Yet, it should not prevent it from being a rental more meant for single guys hopped up on Mountain Dew.

I wouldn't suggest it for those under teenage years because of adult content, though it seems to have enough motion to keep one fixated until the end. Other than looking good, the music was actually one of the highlights of the whole experience, with some classic tunes retooled for the surrealism. In the end, not terrible, but an average effort earning "Sucker Punch" two and a half out of five lobotomies.
