'Redneck Olimpics' promise fun for allFARMINGTON, Sep 16, 2011 (The Daily Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- It's time to bust out the overalls. The "Redneck Olimpics" are coming to Farmington for the first time this week and organizers are claiming it will be the dirtiest clean fun people will have this summer. Even the term "Olimpics" is in jest, as the common athlete in these events likely won't make it to the real Olympics. A brainchild of Boys & Girls Club board member Cindy Roberts who saw it in a magazine, the one-day event is meant to be a last chance at summer fun. "It's a little bit of a fundraiser but also a community event," said Benedikte Whitman, president of Farmington's Boys & Girls Club. "School has just started, cool weather is on its way, this is a last summer fling for the community." It looks to be a hilarious last fling. The Redneck Olimpics will feature events for both children and adults, with combined youth/adult events as well. Each event is competitive, with names like redneck horse shoe or redneck bowling. "Just imagine toilet seats flying through the air to land on posts, or a frozen turkey busting apart a bunch of two gallon jugs," Whitman said, while laughing. "Frozen chickens roll really well. It's all about making up games with whatever's around." Pat Gross and Karen Broten, co-owners of Kalos Communications, a marketing firm that works with the Boys & Girls Club, were instrumental in brainstorming redneck events. "It was a lot of fun," Gross said, unable to hold her laughter in check. "It was all about sitting down and letting your imagination have a good time. We tried to come up with things that were a lot of fun, physically challenging but not something that took a lot of skill." As well as redneck bowling and horse shoes, contestants can sign up for events like hubcap frisbee, the mud pit belly flop or the Larry the Cable Guy look-alike contest. "We've come up with most of the events on our own," Benedikte said. "Looking at the stuff we have and what would be fun for people to do as a team." Hillbilly Hiking involves a team of redneck contestants that are standing with one foot on each of two planks. The planks have rope handles and the goal is to start walking, something that requires everybody to move in unison. The event will also have food and some information booths. "Molina Health Care will be there with their mascot, a giant cat," Benedikte said. "They will have information for people who want to sign up for Medicare, they will also have information on diabetes and child nutrition. They are bringing a Smoothie bike. It's a stationary bike that kids can ride that makes a Smoothie." After the Redneck Olimpics end, there will be an outdoor barn dance featuring country music. "People will be able to dance under the stars," Benedikte said. "Luckily I've been told that it's supposed to be good weather." The Redneck Olimpics runs from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Boys & Girls Club. Contestants can register at the time of the event and fees are $50 for the 7-event team competition, $10 for the outhouse race and $5 for the youth/adult events. For $15 each, contestants can do all seven youth/adult contests. The outdoor barn dance runs from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Both barn dance and the Redneck Olimpics are being held at the Boys & Girl Club, 1925 Positive Way. For more information call (505) 327-6396.
