LCSC school board eyes $1.5 million in improvementsLOGANSPORT, Sep 13, 2011 (Pharos-Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- School board members took the first step Monday night to securing funding for more than $1.5 million in projects at Logansport schools. Logansport Community School Corporation board members unanimously passed a series of resolutions that will allow them to borrow money from the state to make what one member deemed "necessary improvements." The projects include $900,000 to replace old equipment at Lincoln Middle School, $500,000 to update technology throughout the corporation and about $200,000 to update lighting at Logansport High School's football stadium. The lighting project has been on the corporation's to-do list for at least four years, said Greg Korreckt, the corporation's controller and treasurer. He said the lights at the stadium are about 60 years old. "They're wooden poles," he said. "With age and weather, they won't last forever." All of the lights and poles will be replaced, something Korreckt said needs to be done before the lights became a safety hazard. The project has appeared in the initial draft of the school budget for the past four years, Korreckt said. "But the money hasn't been there," he said. By the end of 2011, though, the school corporation will be "dropping off" some of its debt, allowing it to take on more without increasing tax rates, Korreckt said. Money from the projects will come from the debt service fund. The priciest project on the list will involve replacing old equipment at Lincoln. "It's one of our oldest buildings in the corporation," Korreckt said. The school needs to replace its boilers and update its heating and cooling system, he said. Logansport will work to improve the technology at all of its schools, too. Korreckt said officials are looking to buy new desktop computers and install better wireless infrastructure to replace technology that's about seven or eight years old. "As the state moves toward more testing online, we have to move in that direction, too," he said. "It doesn't do us good to get on the Internet if it's slow." One of the next steps is to sell bonds for the projects. None of the projects will start until next year, Korreckt said --Lindsey Ziliak is a staff writer at the Pharos-Tribune.
