Vernon Register-News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Southern Illinois Volunteerism Conference will be held Sept. 29 at the Holiday Inn, featuring Jen White and Katie Campbell as keynote speakers. The conference, which has existed for more than 12 years in various forms, provides capacity-building training opportunities to enhance the skills of volunteer leaders and managers in the public, private and non-profit sectors with professional development workshops for volunteers themselves, according to information from the SIVC. The conference will take place from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 29 at the Holiday Inn and includes morning refreshments, a networking lunch and exhibit hall. White is the leadership development coordinator at Methodist Medical Center in Peoria. Her unique style of "info-tainment" brings new knowledge to people of all ages and disciplines. White will be speaking at 9:30 a.m. on "Put on a Happy Face: How to Make More With Less." Lack of funding and budget cuts make jobs harder and its discussed in most American workplaces today. People are stretched too thin, which results in stress. Depression, one type of stress reaction, is the leading occupational disease of the 21st century, according to information from SIVC. The goal is to leave the workshop refreshed and with a toolbox of best practices for prioritizing, managing, accountability, weathering changes and smiling through every day at work and home. Campbell is the executive director of the Council for Certification in Volunteer Administration. She has worked in the field of nonprofit and volunteer management for more than 30 years as a practitioner, author, trainer and leader. She has authored and co-authored several articles and publications and teaches as adjunct faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University, University of Virginia and Tidewater Community College. Campbell will speak at 12:30 p.m. on "Conveying Our Professional Value." "How are you positioned in your organization? Is the function of volunteer management understood and valued by those with power and influence? Is your messaging in tune with today's realities," information on the session asks. "This highly interactive presentation provides an opportunity to examine how others perceive you and your role, and explore how you might create a new 'brand' for the work you do. Several repositioning strategies will be discussed to stretch and update your thinking in some new directions." Early bird registration at the rate of $25 per person/$15 per student will be open through midnight Sept. 12. Registration will then increase to $30 per person/$20 per student. Registration may be completed online by going to the SIVC Web site, www.sivc.net and following the link. Online registration will no longer be available after Sept. 27, but mail and walk-up registrations will be available at the conference. Instructional hours will be provided to all participants. Workshops and training may also be used to meet the requirements for certification in volunteer administration recertification.
