Internet book club lets teens meet authors

Sep 12, 2011 (The Sun - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- With the help of a Web camera, teens in San Luis, Ariz., will be able to meet authors of acclaimed youth literature.

A grant from the Arizona Humanities Council will allow the San Luis Library to host Authors Across America, a three-month interactive book club that will expose youths to the writings of Carol Lynch Williams, Alane Ferguson and Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez.

The youth participants will read books by each of the writers, then gather at the library to discuss the authors' works with them over the Internet, said Sarah Wisdom, community relations The literary club is open to ages of 13 to 18, and no fee is charged to participate. Wisdom said teens wishing to take part must register since the district has a limited number of copies for participants and space in the San Luis Library is limited.

Williams is the author of "The Chosen One," the first of the three books the teens will read and discuss. It is the story of Kyra, a 13-year-old resident of a polygamous community who is chosen against her will to be a wife of her 60-year-old uncle.

Teen readers will then take part in an Internet chat with Williams at the library, 1075 N. 6th Ave. in San Luis, at 4 p.m. Sept. 21.

Ferguson wrote "The Christopher Killer," a novel about Cameryn, a girl from the Colorado town of Silverton who takes it upon herself to solve the murder of a teen friend, the victim of a serial killer.

That book will be discussed in an Internet chat at 4 p.m. Oct. 27 at the library.

Valdes-Rodriguez is the author of "Haters," about a new student at a California high school who encounters hate and cruelty among members of the student body.

The Internet discussion with Valdes-Rodriguez will take place at 4 p.m. Nov. 30 at the library.

Teens wishing to take part in the book club should call the San Luis Library at 627-8344.
