Sooners' Travis Lewis expresses hope he will play against Florida State

Sep 12, 2011 (Tulsa World - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Maybe Travis Lewis could play against Florida State after all.

Lewis, a senior linebacker at Oklahoma and the Sooners' leading tackler each of the previous three seasons, posted Monday on his Twitter feed that he could be feeling up to Saturday's game in Tallahassee.

"For everyone that's asking...I'll let y'all know by the end of the day if (I'm) going to play this week," Lewis wrote.

Lewis broke the sesamoid bone in his left foot during the first week of training camp. His original diagnosis was to miss eight weeks, but if he came back for this week's game against the No. 5-ranked Seminoles, he will have been out five weeks.

OU coach Bob Stoops said during Monday morning's Big 12 coaches teleconference, "He'll be evaluated today at some point. What time of day that is, I don't know. They'll let me know once they check him out.

"It's not what I expect. I know Travis (and) all players are optimistic, but as far as doctors go, that's not what I expect." Lewis posted on Twitter Sunday afternoon, "Toe feels amazing ... just finished jogging and feeling very very optimistic." Sunday night, he updated with, "I can walk and run, pain free without the toe hurting... all these equals GAME TIME!" The sesamoid is a tiny, non-weight-bearing, almost fragment-like bone floating in the ligament that attaches to the big toe. Many people don't even have one, while some have two. Stoops said he suffered a similar injury when he played at Iowa and was able to play through the pain.
